Kids of all ages can fill their needs for speed at Island Rec’s newest event, The Hill of Thrills Soap Box Race, on Saturday, May 21. Thrill seekers can race their homemade non-motorized contraptions in this classic ‘gravity’ race down Park street from Marguerite to Price streets.
“This is a great community development event,” said Lowell Jons, Island Rec recreation specialist. “And it’s a great way for kids to develop STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills.” Originally, soap box cars were made from wooden apple or soap crates but participants can build their cars out of any materials recycled, purchased or scavenged from the back of the garage.
Racing will be divided by age groups starting with five to eight year olds, nine to twelve, thirteen to fifteen and sixteen and older. Racers will compete in teams of two, racing two times each. Medals will be awarded to the top five fastest times in each age group. Medals will also be given out to the most creatively built car and for best decorations. Thinking outside the (soap) box is encouraged! Prior to the race, a children’s parade will kick off the morning festivities. Kids through age five are welcome to show off their soap box cars, tricylces, bikes, scooters or just walk the route. Wild outfits and decorations are encouraged. Early registration is encouraged and Island Rec has info packets available that include tips on car building as well as rules and regulations for participants. Island Rec will also have examples of different cars and a builders station at the Children’s Festival on May 7 to help racers prepare for their big day.
