The San Juan Island School Board last week set the stage for cutting roughly $356,000 out of the district’s 2011-2012 budget in anticipation of another drop in state support.
The board passed a pair of resoutions April 20 that enable school officials to meet legal obligations in notifying teachers and classified employees who’s job are targeted for elimination under the district’s pending spending reduction plan.
“I think we’ve been pretty good in the past about keeping cuts away from the classrooms,” board Chairman Boyd Pratt said of previous cost-cutting moves. The district has reduced expenses by about $1 million over the past two years.
“We’re still waiting for the final shoe to fall with the Legislature in special session,” Pratt added. “It’s getting tiring, quite frankly, having to cut year after year.”
Pratt said that the board expects to receive an update about revenue, expenses and potential cuts from Superintendent Rick Thompsen at its Wednesday meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. at the high school library.
He noted the district won’t know for certain how much it will have to eliminate from next year’s school budget until state lawmakers determine funding amounts for K-12 schools as part of the state’s two-year budget.
Until then, the district spending reduction plan includes:
— One and one-half teaching positions at the elementary school ($101,523).
— One and one-half teaching position at the middle or high schools ($108,953).
— Elimination of $20,000 subsidy to After School Kids program.
— Reduce para-educator program by 15.5 hours ($78,034).
— Reduce high school career counseling center’s support position by two hours a day ($9,923).
