Arnell Haws is recovering from a stroke
Arnell Haws, former director of San Juan Island senior services and a force behind the development of Mullis Community Senior Center, is recovering from a stroke.
She was in Harborview Medical Center on Monday. An account has been established to help her meet expenses while she undergoes rehabilitation therapy.
Contributions can be made in any Key Bank branch in the Arnell Haws Rehab Account.
Illg is president of Leadership S.J.s for 2008-09
Leadership San Juan Islands in entering its fifth year with big plans for the Class of 2009.
Liz Illg is president of Leadership San Juan Islands for 2008-09.
Cynthia Stark-Wickman is program coordinator this year; Georgeana Cook will assist her.
Denise King, as Curriculum Development Committee chairwoman, will provide support and direction for the program coordinator and the presenters.
Shannan Sword volunteered to be an at-large Curriculum Development Committee member.

Deadline for applications is in early November. Applicants will be informed of acceptance late November and short preview meeting will be planned prior to the retreat in late January. Tuition is $500.
Former islander Joby Jull is now an Eagle Scout
Joby Jull, 18, son of John Jull and Carolyn Stearns, formerly of Friday Harbor, was honored at an Eagle Scout ceremony Aug. 10 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
To earn Scouting’s highest award, Jull had to earn 21 merit badges, serve as a leader in his troop, and complete a major community service project.
Jull’s service project took place at the Chestnut Ridge Camp in Efland, N.C., where he coordinated and built, with the assistance of other Scouts, a hiking and riding trail. The project took more than six months from planning through completion.
Jull was a member of Troop 4090 of Friday Harbor until his move with his family to North Carolina in 2005. Since then, he has been a member of Troop 822, through which he earned his Eagle Scout rank, and Venture Crew 838, both of Hillsborough, N.C.
During his Scouting career, Jull served as patrol leader, senior patrol leader, and crew president.
Jull continues to be active in Venturing and served at Scout Camp this summer as an assistant scout master.
Jull will be a sophomore this fall at North Carolina State University, where he is majoring in English.
Hertel exhibits 1850s gun work on Saturday
National Park Service volunteer Greg Hertel explains the attributes, use and repair of a variety of 19th century firearms in a program scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday on the English Camp parade ground.
The program is free. A golf cart is available for transportation to and from the parade ground. Disabled persons should call the park at 378-2902 or 378-4409 for special access information.
Hertel is a retired school teacher and is a port commissioner for the Port of Friday Harbor. He has a long interest in firearms history and has many artifact arms in his personal collection.
He also will discuss how 19th century development of arms spurred changes in tactics during the American Civil War.
Barnard’s solo exhibition opens Friday at IMA
Bryn Barnard’s illustrations for the book, “The Land of Smaerd,” go on exhibit Friday at Island Museum of Art.
The children’s book was written by Andrea von Botefuhr from a story by Angela Russell, and published by KnowWonder Publishing.
The colorful, richly detailed, surreal images explore a realm of imagination, hope and altered reality.
The show continues through Sept. 17.
