A 19-year-old San Juan Island woman was flown off-island late Wednesday with serious head injuries following a single-car crash near the intersection of Harrison Street and Warbass Way.

According to Sheriff Bill Cumming, Pauliena Flanery was traveling alone at the time of the crash, which occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Flanery, who authorities believe was not wearing a seat belt, suffered serious though not life-threatening head injuries and possible chest injuries as well, Cumming said.

Flanery was eastbound on Harrison Street headed out of town when she apparently lost control of her pickup near the point at which Turn Point Road, Warbass Way and Harrison Street converge. The pickup careened off the road and took out several mailboxes and struck a light pole, and then slammed head-on into a retaining wall before coming to a stop.

Vehicle speed is believed to have contributed to the collision, Cumming said. The crash and its cause remains under investigation.
