At Tuesday’s San Juan Island School Board meeting, a new chapter was begun with the addition of new members and reassigned offices.
Before the meeting began, there was an informal celebration of Ann Spratt’s service as principal of Friday Harbor Middle School. Spratt is retiring from a 35-year career in public education — a career distinguished by her being named 2005 Middle School Principal of the Year by the Association of Washington School Principals and the Association of Washington Middle Level Principals. She was principal of Icicle River Middle School when she won that honor.
Tuesday, Spratt was given a clock as a token of appreciation and lauded for her commitment to education.
PTA President Deborah Nolan and Roche Harbor General Manager Brent Snow, who ran unopposed for school board positions in November, were sworn in by Superintendent Walt Wegener. They succeed Sally Bryan and Todd Roberts, who did not run for reelection.
David McCauley was elected chairman by the board; he succeeds Boyd Pratt, who has served on the board for 10 years and served as chairman for eight. Pratt continues as a school board member and as representative to the Washington Interscholatic Activities Association, or WIAA. Heidi Lopez was elected vice chairwoman of the board.
