A take-off of the TV program that helps participants lose weight is coming to San Juan Island.
San Juan Island Fitness is organizing the Community Weight Loss Challenge, a variation of TV’s “The Biggest Loser.”
The 15-week challenge starts May 15 and ends Aug. 15 at the San Juan County Fair. The “biggest loser” individual and team will win cash prizes.
Sam Leigh of San Juan Island Fitness said the program doesn’t really end on Aug. 15, because participants continue to receive fitness support — and the benefits of good health — after the challenge ends.
Leigh said the program is designed to give islanders motivation to kick-start their weight loss goals, lose extra pounds, and redevelop their shape and strength.
“We can all use that support forever,” she said. “It’s about support and continuing our efforts. That’s what success is all about.”
Participants start with a “before” body picture, a lean muscle vs. fat body composition test, and a questionnaire. As they participate, they will receive daily support, with regular feedback and weekly weigh-ins.
The rules: Start where you are. Do what you enjoy. Be the result of your efforts.
A challenge Web site is being set up so islanders can follow participants’ progress. The challenge will have a booth at the Children’s Festival, Saturday at the San Juan County Fairgrounds.
Entry fee is $75 per individual and $280 per team of four. A portion of the proceeds will go to the San Juan Island School District sports program.

Who: Anyone who is 10 or more pounds overweight. Individuals or teams.
What: An individual or team weight loss challenge. The program will be run in accordance with commonly accepted height, weight, age, gender and body composition standards.
Where: Anyone residing in San Juan County.
When: Program begins May 15 and runs 13 weeks to Aug. 15. Results will be announced immediately following the awards ceremony for the annual 8.8K run at the San Juan County Fair.
