The San Juan Dragons take on the Lynnwood Tigers in the 2010 Washington Boys High School Lacrosse State Championship Division II game today at 5 p.m. in Seattle’s Memorial Stadium. San Juan (14-2-0) is making its first trip to a state title game since beginning lacrosse play in 2003. Lynnwood (15-3-0), which appeared in the 2006 state title game, rolled through the season dropping its only games to Division I Tahoma, Stanwood and Providence. San Juan’s defeats came against Lynnwood in its season opener and an overtime loss to Snohomish in late April.

San Juan, the Skagit Conference champion, is making its first trip to a state title game since beginning lacrosse play in 2003. Lynnwood, the Cascade Conference champion, which appeared in the 2006 state title game, rolled through the season dropping its only games to Division I Tahoma, Stanwood and Providence. San Juan’s only losses came against Lynnwood in its season opener and a double-overtime loss to Snohomish in late April.

Lynnwood is led by the league’s top two goal scorers, senior midfielders Alex Tindall and Trey Knowles. In 13 regular season games apiece, the two combined for a total of 146 points. Tindall scored 58 goals and 21 assists for an average of 6.08 regular season points per game. Knowles scored 43 goals and 24 assists for an average of 5.15 regular season points per game. In two playoff games, Knowles scored 11 goals and 2 assists for 6.50 points per game.

Five of San Juan’s players were named to the All-Skagit Conference team. In the regular season, senior midfielder Michael Ausilio led Division II in groundball recovery (129); Lynnwood’s Alex Tindall is seventh with 90. San Juan senior attackman Ryan Guard is the division’s third-leading scorer; in 13 games, he scored 38 goals and 16 assists for an average of 4.15 regular-season points. In the playoffs, senior attackman Kyle Skoog led the Dragons with 11 goals and 2 assists for 4.33 points per game.

San Juan goalie Calen Mehrer’s save percentage of .684 is the fourth-best in Division II.

On the road to the finals, Lynnwood finished the regular season at 11-2 league, 12-3 overall, before defeating Garfield 3-1 in the opening round of the playofffs, Sammamish 11–7 in the quarterfinals and Wenatchee 14–13 in overtime in the semifinals. San Juan finished the regular season at 11-2-0 league and overall before dispatching Gig Harbor 21–5 in the opening round, Roosevelt 7–2 in the quarterfinals and Lake Washington 9–8 in the semifinals.

The Division II title game gets under way at 5 p.m.

Lacrosse is believed to be the fastest-growing sport in the U.S. In Washington state, the sport has seen double-digit growth in six of the last eight years. In 2010, more than 2,700 high school students representing 83 boys’ and 55 girls’ varsity and JV teams in Eastern and Western Washington compete in a nine-week season March through May. The annual championship games take place in late May.
