Homes needed for exchange students
Spring Street International School is seeking to expand its boarding offerings to include host family stays for international and U.S. boarding students.
In addition to the school’s dormitory, the school is looking to place full-time boarding students in host family environments.
Qualified families will have the opportunity to support the mission of education in cultural diversity and global citizenship.
There will be a choice of boys and girls ranging in age from 15-17, from a variety of countries and the Pacific Northwest.
International students will board full-time, with the exception of school travel, while U.S. students will usually be weekday boarders, traveling home on weekends.
Host families will be compensated for their services with a monthly payment per student, based on full- or part-time boarding. Full student profiles will be provided and host family interviews will be required.
Host families are eligible for a modest tax deduction for every month of hosting.
“Hosting a student can be a wonderful cultural and developmental experience and the school’s campus life will be dramatically enhanced by the presence of these students,” said Jerry Riley, Spring Street International School admissions director.

Island Rec holds natural history weekend camp
Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, San Juan County 4-H and Island Rec have teamed up again to offer an educational and fun overnight camp to children 8-10.
Campers will experience hands-on marine and forest ecology exploration, cultural history activities, fun educational games, a canoeing adventure, and a cooperative camping experience.
Camp begins 1 p.m. June 27 and ends 1 p.m. June 29. The cost is $25. Space is limited.
Based at English Camp, activities are taught by trained educators from OMSI, as well as staff from the National Park Service. 4-H teen leaders will assist OMSI staff members.

Washington Iditarod racer comes to library
Laura Daugereau, Washington’s first woman to compete in the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, is coming to San Juan Island for a presentation about her rookie run this year.
She will speak and show slides at the San Juan Island Library on Saturday, 7 p.m.
This legendary race goes from Anchorage through central Alaska and along the western Bering Sea Coast, finishing 1,049 miles later under the great burled arch in downtown Nome.
The presentation at the library is a rare opportunity to meet a seasoned musher and see first-hand her love for her dogs and their love for her.
The slide show will feature education about dog care, equipment used, the sport of mushing, and the historic 1,049-mile Iditarod Trail.
This presentation on “The Last Great Race” is co-sponsored by Kim and Mike Bertrand and Friends of the Library and is free and open to adults and families.
Marching band members needed for the parade
If you play an instrument and would like to do something fun this summer, consider joining the Community Marching Band.
The Community Marching Band rehearses on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings 7-8, in the Friday Harbor High School Band Room.
Rehearsals begin June 23.
The total commitment to this community event is five rehearsals, culminating with the parade on the Fourth of July.
