San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:
Feb. 17: About a dozen bronze door handles disappeared in an apparent theft at a home under construction on the north side of San Juan Island. The door handles, each measuring 3/4-inches in diameter and together valued at $2,500, vanished a Boundary Point construction site.
Feb. 21: Road signs bore the brunt of an apparent vandalism spree on Lopez Island. Someone knocked down a stop sign and a yield sign near the intersection of Cross and Fisherman Bay roads, and fired several rounds of ammunition into a stop sign near the intersection of Airport and Shark Reef roads.
Feb. 22: Someone apparently yanked four pot plants out of the ground, stuffed them inside a pair of large plastic bags and them tossed those two bags into a ditch along side of the main thoroughfare on the west side of Orcas Island. The bags were discovered by a Public Works crew near the intersection of Blanc and Orcas roads.
Feb. 25: An Orcas Island woman was issued a warning letter after her pit bull reportedly ran into a neighbor’s home and then attacked, and injured, that person’s dog. It’s reportedly not the first time that the 47-year-old’s pit bull has wandered away from its home.
Feb. 27: An Orcas Island faces a charge of misdemeanor assault following a mid-afternoon alleged altercation with his girlfriend. The 29-year-old, who reportedly suffered and inflicted injuries during the clash, was taken into custody at his Green Cow Lane home at about 3:30 p.m.
Feb. 28: Someone drove into Orcas Island’s Buck Park and left tire tracks in the playing field behind the skate park in an apparent act of vandalism. Restoring the grass will reportedly cost $150.
March 1: A single-car collision led to a mid-morning arrest of an Orcas Island man for DUI. The 55-year-old, who was taken into custody at about 10:30 a.m., reportedly ran off the road and into a ditch in the 1800 block of Orcas Road.
March 2: Two laptop computers vanished from an Orcas Island home in an apparent break-in and theft in the area of Eastsound. The homeowner, a 70-year-old woman, claims someone broke into her Brackenfern Lane home and stole both hers and her daughter’s laptops, valued together at $950.
March 3: A single-car collision led to an early-evening arrest of a San Juan Island man for DUI. The 24-year-old, who was taken into custody at about 7:30 p.m., reportedly drove his van into a ditch near the intersection of Larson Street and Tucker Avenue shortly before deputies arrived on scene.
March 6: A San Juan Island man was arrested for possession of marijuana following a mid-evening traffic stop near the intersection of Marguerite and Park streets. The 32-year-old, who was pulled over for reportedly driving a vehicle with defective equipment, was taken into custody at about 10 p.m. He was also ticketed for driving with a suspended license and without proof of insurance.
March 7: A dog was seized and taken away from a San Juan Island home in an alleged case of animal neglect. Deputies were at a couple’s Prohaska Road home to serve a no-contact order when they reportedly saw evidence of the animal, which was taken to the animal shelter, suffering from neglect.
March 8: A trio of warrants led to the arrest of a San Juan Island man following a mid-morning traffic stop near the intersection of Mullis and Spring streets. The 32-year-old was reportedly talking on a cell-phone while driving when he was pulled at about 10 a.m. He was also ticketed driving with a suspended license and for the cell-phone infraction.
— A late-night altercation between a San Juan Island couple led to the arrest of 57-year-old man on a charge of misdemeanor vandalism. The man was taken into custody at his Spyglass Road home at about 2 a.m.
March 9: Twenty-four planks of Colonial Oak trim, measuring 14-feet each, and $175 worth of steel disappeared in an apparent theft at a San Juan Island second-hand shop and recycling center on Roche Harbor Road. The thief or thieves also reportedly snatched a Jacuzzi bathtub which staff at Consignment Treasures had set aside for recycling.
