Both the sales tax increase to improve emergency radio services in San Juan County and the capital and technology levy for the San Juan School District passed. As of 8:34 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 4,833 ballots have been counted with an approximate 1,500 remaining. There are 13,336 registered voters in San Juan County.
Voters in San Juan County approved the start of a sales tax of 0.05 percent without an expiration date and a 0.15 percent tax that expires after 60 months — or 5 years — to be used for the design and construction of the communications system. Proposition 1 passed by 67.51 percent, 3,135 votes.
On San Juan Island, voters approved a renewal of an existing capital and technology levy for the school district by 68.09 percent, 1,598 affirmative votes.
