Primaries are notorious for low voter turnout. True to form, as of Aug. 1 at 8 p.m.the San Juan County Elections office calculated only 29 percent of registered voters turned in their ballots, with 600 left to be counted. In the candidate races, the top two will progress to the general election.
San Juan County Fire District 2, Orcas, Proposition 1, restoring regular property tax, failed with 1,060, or 77 percent, of saying no and 312, or 22.74 percent, yes.
Lopez School Board Results:
Sarah Murphy received 644 votes or 81.73 percent
David Kester received 112 votes or 14.21 percent
Eden R. Zillioux received 27 votes, 3.42 percent
There were five write-ins for 788 total votes.
San Juan Fire Commissioner District 2 (Orcas)
Kate Hansen received 564 votes or 40.46 percent
Toni Knudson received 504 votes or 36.15 percent
Leith Templln received 325 votes or 23.31 percent
There was one write-in for a total of 1,394 votes.
Port of Friday Harbor:
Rich Goodhart received 373 votes for 55.92 percent
Greg Hertel received 221 votes or 33.13 percent
Randy Cowley received 68 votes or 10.19 percent
There were five write-ins for a total of 667 votes.
Port of Orcas:
Rick Fant received 540 votes or 39.33 percent
Mia Kartiganer received 500 votes or 36.42 percent
And Bob Phalan received 330 or 24.03 percent.
There were three write-ins for a total of 1,372 votes.
