Port one of 11 in Washington awarded electrification grant

Submitted by The Port of Friday Harbor

The Port of Friday Harbor is one of 11 Washington ports that were awarded a portion of the state’s $26.5 million Port Electrification Grant Program. According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, these projects collectively plan to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by more than 140,000 metric tons over the next 10 years.

The Port of Friday Harbor was awarded $7 million in support of an expansive program of carbon reduction projects.

The Port of Friday Harbor Commission has set aggressive environmental goals for the Port and this funding, along with additional local, state, and federal grants, is allowing us to pursue a bold environmental program. This $7 million grant is supporting a suite of projects, developed as a public private partnership between the Port of Friday Harbor and Photon Marine Corporation, designed to support, expand, and expedite the adoption of electric boat propulsion within the Salish Sea.

The Port of Friday Harbor Executive Director, Todd Nicholson, said “This is an exciting and rewarding time for the Port. We are extremely grateful for the support of the community and the continuing funding from our local, state, and federal partners. This support and funding is essential to allowing our Port to be a leader in legacy contamination clean up, carbon reduction, and protecting the Salish Sea environment that we all care so deeply for”.
