Ann Elizabeth Slocombe of Friday Harbor, Wash., died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 at Islands Convalescent Center in Friday Harbor.
She was 87.
She was born on Dec. 17, 1920 in Rigby, Idaho, the daughter of Valentine and Eva (Mechling) Hanson. Ann moved to Friday Harbor with her mother when she was 21. She was employed as a telephone operator and also as a clerk at Templin’s grocery store on Orcas Island.
Ann met her husband, Russell Slocombe, while he was in the Coast Guard. The couple moved to San Francisco, where they lived for many years, but always returned each year to Orcas for vacation. Upon retirement, they moved back to Orcas.
Following Russell’s death, Ann moved to Friday Harbor with her daughter, and volunteered at the senior centers on Orcas Island and Friday Harbor. Ann was also very active with the American Legion Auxiliary on Orcas.
She enjoyed all needlework, but especially liked to knit.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Russell. She is survived by her daughter, Teresa (Terry) Slocombe of Friday Harbor; and her cousin and cousin-in-law, Vern and Gloria Mechling of Salt Lake City, Utah.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to either the Alzheimer’s Association, the Orcas Senior Center or Friday Harbor Senior Center.
