The San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce has announced it will spend some of its federal stimulus money to start a program to help islanders feel better about the economy. Chamber Director Debbie Pigman said the program will employ Disney characters as morale boosters.
Throwing the door open on a new career, Woody — the congenial, though sometimes conflicted, cowboy of “Toy Story” movie fame — last week announced he will run for San Juan County sheriff in 2010. “I’ve got proven problem-solving skills and a knack for getting things done,” said Woody, who goes by the single name by which he’s commonly known.

BC Ferries has agreed to reduce landing fees for the Anacortes-San Juan Islands-Sidney ferry by $100,000 a year for the next three years, a savings of around 25 percent, state lawmakers announced today.
The sun shone in a clear sky, Canadians waved U.S. flags and a bagpiper piped a welcome as about 225 mainlanders and islanders walked off the ferry and onto Canadian soil in Sidney, B.C. The first Anacortes-San Juan Islands-Sidney ferry run of the season was celebrated on both sides of the international border Sunday. But those riding this ferry knew that the event was as much a campaign as a party, particularly with talk in Olympia of possibly ending the route in the future.
Concepia, Friday Harbor’s latest business venture, opens Saturday with the first solo show of Randy Laybourne, 2-5 p.m., in Churchill Corner, just above the ferry landing.

The Town of Friday Harbor will keep its options open while the county determines what to do about its solid-waste transfer station on Sutton Road, according to town officials. During a joint meeting Tuesday of the town and county councils, Town Council members said tipping fees will be a deciding factor on whether the town continues to be a refuse customer of the county or starts up its own solid-waste operation at the town-owned Sutton Road site.
The Washington state ferry Elwha is out of service for repairs. The 8:35 a.m. sailing to Orcas and the 9:50 a.m. sailing from Orcas to Anacortes were cancelled. The Yakima and the Sealth will pick up additional traffic in the islands, Washington State Ferries reported.
On March 19, Jacque Grone suffered a brain aneurysm and was flown off-island to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. After extensive surgery, she remains in intensive care. The recovery and rehabilitation will be extensive but her doctors say her prognosis is very good.
The search for a new full-time superintendent for San Juan Island School District is in full swing. Search consultant John Fotheringham of Northwest Leadership Associates was hired to meet with faculty, staff, parents, students and other community members on March 19. The field of candidates will be narrowed from five to three at an executive board meeting on April 2. The candidates will be interviewed on April 11. The two finalists will spend all day at the district on April 13-14. The new superintendent will be chosen sometime this spring.
