United Way of San Juan County has awarded $115,000 to 29 local non-profit programs. “We are exceedingly grateful for the trust and generous support of the community,” Executive Director Bonnie Gilmore said. “Our donors are important partners in our efforts to provide services to hundreds of island residents who participate in United Way supported programs.”

The federal Small Business Administration will open a Disaster Loan Outreach Center in the San Juan County Courthouse this month to accept applications for business losses caused by the winter storms. SBA officials will be in the courthouse, second floor, on Feb. 5-6, and Feb. 11-13, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The 16th annual Knowledge Bowl is Feb. 5, 7 p.m. in the San Juan Community Theatre. The event is presented by the San Juan Public Schools Foundation. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

The San Juan Island School Board meeting scheduled for Wednesday
has been rescheduled for March 4, 6 p.m. The School Board was scheduled to act upon financial planning recommendations at the Wednesday night meeting. However, the board will delay the meeting to honor faculty and staff requests for more time to understand the recommendations and the underlying financial projections.
The ordinance change, requested by local businesses, would allow illumination of signs and display cases after business hours.

Skagit County has lent the Firewise communities of San Juan Island a chipper to help them maintain safety zones and reduce fuel loads. Originally, the chipper was going to be here for 10 days which allowed only the new Firewise Communities access to its use. Now the plan is for about three weeks or as long as the chipper is here, to allow any present or new Firewise Community to use the chipper for a day. If any non-Firewise Community would join the free nationally recognized program, they would also qualify for a free chipper day.
Jawaad Darcelle Reaves pleaded guilty Tuesday in San Juan County Superior Court to one count of first-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of his brother, Jermaine. Initially, Reaves, 22, had been charged with second-degree murder following the shooting on Sept. 18 at the Tucker Avenue apartment that the two shared.
An 18-year-old man and three San Juan Island girls face alcohol-related charges following a late-night rollover crash Friday near the intersection of Beaverton Valley and No. 2 Schoolhouse roads. According to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Department, none of the four suffered serious injury, though one of the girls was flown off-island with possible internal injuries shortly after the crash. Those injuries proved to be relatively minor and she has since returned to the island, Undersheriff Jon Zerby said.
A new study funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Science Foundation reveals that a part of the Strait of Juan de Fuca is a potential “hot spot” for toxic harmful algal blooms affecting the Washington and British Columbia coasts.
The local Animal Protection Society is preparing to care for 12 dogs seized from two puppy mills in Skagit and Snohomish counties last week. All told, about 600 dogs were seized by authorities. About 80 percent of the dogs are pregnant and some 1,500 puppies are expected to be born in the next few weeks.
