O. Christian Nelson earns national award
O. Christian Nelson of Friday Harbor, a retired interpreter with East Bay Regional Parks in Oakland, Calif., is the recipient of the National Association for Interpretation’s Outstanding Senior/Retired Interpreter Award for 2008.
Nelson has been involved in interpretation for nearly 50 years. In 1960, his work attracted the attention of W. Penn Mott, director of the East Bay Regional Parks and one of the nation’s foremost park executives. Mott selected Nelson to head his Interpretive Department.
Nelson and Howard Weaver helped found the Association of Interpretive Naturalists at Bradford Woods in Indiana in 1960. Nelson then founded the Western Interpreters Association, of which he served two terms as president.
Nelson played a major role in merging the associations and giving greater attention to historical as well as nature interpretation. He was a board member and a Meritorious Service Award recipient from the associations.
Nelson was 1978 keynote speaker at the Royal Australian Parks and Recreation National Conference in Burnie, Tasmania.
Nelson and wife, Ann, were elected honorary life members of the National Association for Interpretation in 1988 and retired to Washington state.
The National Association for Interpretation is a professional organization for park historians and naturalists, heritage interpreters, zoo and museum educators, park managers, and others affiliated with interpreting the natural, historical and cultural environment to the public. The organization has more than 4,000 members.
Calvin Woods receives degree in teaching
Calvin Frederick Woods of Friday Harbor received a specialist in education leadership degree from the University of Idaho Dec. 13.
Woods was one of nearly 700 graduates to receive degrees at winter commencement in the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center.
Sheryl Tribolet earns all A’s at Oregon State
Sheryl L. Tribolet of Friday Harbor is earning all A’s at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
Tribolet is a junior majoring in Natural Resources. She is on the Honor Roll for fall term and is one of 576 students carrying a 4.0 GPA.
