The San Juan Preservation Trust announced the appointment of five new trustees at its first annual Summer Social, Saturday on Dodie Gann’s Red Mill Farm on San Juan Island.

Billed as a “Celebration of Art, Islands and Conservation,” this event was a collaboration of the Preservation Trust, the artists of Plein Air Washington, and Gallery San Juan in Friday Harbor.

The San Juan Preservation Trust is a private, non-profit conservation land trust founded in 1979 by a group of local citizens.

Noted for its $18.5 million acquisition of Turtleback Mountain on Orcas Island, the organization has permanently protected more than 240 properties, 28 miles of shoreline, and 13,000 acres on 18 islands, including land now managed as public parks, private nature preserves, and working farms and forests.

Governed by a volunteer board of trustees representing islands throughout the San Juan archipelago, the Trust provides its membership with the opportunity to vote for new or incumbent trustees.

Reelected: Mary Riveland, Orcas Island; Fred Ellis, Shaw Island; Charles Givens, Lopez Island; Steve McKeon, Orcas Island; Roger deRoos, San Juan Island.

Newly elected: Margaret Carper, Orcas Island; Cynthia Dilling, Lopez Island; Carolyn Haugen, San Juan Island; Samantha Martin Sprenger, Shaw Island; Brian Windrope, San Juan.

An exhibit of plein air (outdoor) paintings created on Preservation Trust lands and public lands throughout the San Juans was unveiled at the Summer Social and will be on display at Gallery San Juan in Friday Harbor beginning Saturday. Proceeds from the sale of these paintings are being donated to the Preservation Trust to advance its land conservation efforts.
