The San Juan Sheriff’s office responded to the following calls.
Aug. 11
• San Juan deputies were advised of a case of child abuse. The incident occurred out-of-county, but the victim was safe in Friday Harbor. Child Protective Services had been unable to contact their local agents; San Juan deputies facilitated contact with the main local CPS office to assist in the investigation.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of an explosion that occurred on False Bay Road in the early morning hours. Evidence was collected and the incident was documented.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle and issued them a citation for not wearing a seatbelt.
• A deputy responded to a citizen complaint of discriminatory behavior by a vacation rental manager on San Juan. Information was taken and a report was filed.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a dog bite. All parties were contacted and the incident was documented.
• Someone turned in a found purse to a San Juan deputy. The owner was unable to be contacted and the property was entered into evidence.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a disturbance on a boat at the Port of Friday Harbor. The deputy determined no crime was committed.
• A deputy responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision on Roche Harbor Road. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence and cited for driving with wheels off the roadway.
• A San Juan deputy responded to an assault call. The complainant only wanted the incident documented and did not wish to pursue criminal charges.
Aug. 12
• San Juan deputy responded to an unknown trouble call. The caller phoned 911 but did not engage in conversation. The deputy investigated and located the caller. He declined any assistance and a report was completed.
• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a domestic incident near Friday Harbor. The involved parties were interviewed, and the incident was found to be verbal in nature.
• A deputy responded to an accident with a possible injury near Eastsound. After all involved were cleared medically and the investigation was completed the at-fault driver was issued a citation for failing to yield.
• A deputy responded to a single-vehicle collision in a parking lot on Orcas that involved striking a tree.
• An Orcas deputy responded to an ongoing issue with a juvenile subject who was suspected of theft.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a parking problem at the Roche Harbor County Dock. Multiple vessels were issued citations for permit violations.
• An Orcas deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for failing to stop at a posted stop sign. The driver of the vehicle was found to be unlicensed and subsequently issued a citation for not having a valid operator’s license.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a parking problem. The driver of the vehicle was unable to be contacted and the vehicle was impounded.
• A San Juan deputy took a report of found property. The owner was located and reunited with her cell phone.
• A deputy on Orcas conducted a traffic stop and issued the driver a citation for speeding, 52 mph in a 35 mph zone.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle and issued them a citation for speeding; multiple other warnings were given.
Aug. 13
• A Lopez deputy responded to a littering call.
• Twice, San Juan deputies were dispatched to a naked person in a crisis. On arrival, no crime appeared to have been committed and the person refused any assistance. Ultimately, after speaking with the deputy for an undisclosed length of time, the naked person agreed to pursue treatment.
• San Juan deputies responded to a request to trespass a subject from a business downtown. The subject was later located and issued a trespass letter.
• A San Juan deputy stopped a driver for driving with a suspended driver’s license. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license-second-degree and for an ignition interlock violation. The driver was then transported to the hospital for an evaluation.
• A Lopez deputy stopped the driver of a speeding vehicle and issued them a citation for traveling 39 mph in a 25 mph zone, and a warning for improper tab display.
• San Juan deputies responded to a request to trespass a subject from a property downtown. The subject was later located and issued a trespass letter.
• Orcas deputies received a request from the management of a market to issue a trespass warning letter to a subject who was loitering. The subject was located and issued a trespass warning letter.
• A Lopez deputy stopped the driver of a speeding vehicle near the village and issued them a citation for traveling 39 mph in a posted 25 mph zone.
• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a citizen dispute. The parties were separated and the report will be sent to the prosecutor’s office for a charging decision.
• Deputies on Orcas responded to a citizen dispute. No crime was committed.
• A Lopez deputy stopped and ticketed a motorist after he saw them speeding in the 1800 block of Fisherman Bay Road.
• San Juan County Sheriff’s Log A deputy responded to a Lopez home for an animal bite complaint. It was determined an older family dog that suffered from hip pain and deafness bit a family friend after she walked up from behind him and vigorously petted his hip. The family friend was treated by Lopez EMS.
Aug. 14
• A deputy on San Juan observed a vehicle double-parked in town. The vehicle’s owner was issued a citation for double parking and the vehicle was posted with a 24-hour tow notice.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a domestic violence incident. The incident was investigated and deputies found no crime was committed.
• A deputy responded to a Lopez residence for a possible car prowl complaint. The reporting person stated she thought she heard someone trying to open her car door while she was inside her home. An investigation showed there was no evidence of a crime.
• An Orcas deputy authored an Information Report regarding alleged threats that occurred in May of 2021.
• A deputy on Orcas started an investigation regarding an attempted extortion.
• A Lopez deputy was sent to check on a child left unattended in a parked car in Lopez Village. The parent had returned when the deputy arrived.
• A deputy was dispatched to a traffic accident in Friday Harbor. The deputy arrived and was told there were two vehicles involved. Both vehicles were trying to pass a vehicle waiting for a parking space.
• An Orcas deputy served a person a trespass warning letter for a property on the 20 block of Swan Road.
• Deputies responded to a trouble unknown (911 hang-up) in Friday Harbor. Deputies searched the area and finally located the person who called; however, they refused assistance.
• A deputy responded to a found property call. A tablet, found in the Orcas area was turned over to the sheriff’s office.
• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for a defective brake light. Ultimately, the deputy arrested the driver for driving with a suspended license-second degree and issued them citations for not having insurance and for a defective brake light.
Aug. 15
• A Lopez deputy observed a very agile, animated man on a stand-up paddleboard off Odlin Park. On closer examination, the man was pulling up crab pots. Once the man returned to the beach, he was contacted and his catch checked. The deputy also gave him a stern warning for not having a lifejacket.
• The reporting deputy was dispatched to a theft in the Friday Harbor area. The deputy arrived and one person was arrested for theft (shoplifting). The incident was referred to the prosecuting attorney’s office for a court date.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident.
• A Lopez deputy was flagged down to assist a disabled vehicle with a dead battery in the village. The car was jump-started and the driver went on their way.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a 911 hangup/open line call. Deputies interviewed the people on the scene and determined an assault had occurred, but no one wanted to cooperate in a criminal investigation. Deputies cleared the scene.
• A deputy on San Juan took a report of a subject “screaming foul language” on a boat. The deputy attempted contact with the reporting party but was unsuccessful. Due to no crime being reported the call was closed.
• A deputy on San Juan posted a 24-hour tow notice on a vehicle parked on the public roadway with an expired registration over 45 days.
• A Bothell driver was issued a citation for driving 47 mph in a 25 mph zone on Lopez.
Aug. 16
• An Orcas deputy took a report of a possible stolen boat off Jones Island.
• A deputy conducted a traffic stop on Orcas Road. The driver was issued a citation for speeding, 45 mph in a posted 35 mph zone. The same driver had received a warning a few months prior.
• A deputy on San Juan took a report of fraud. A citizen reported their was identity stolen and used to open a fraudulent bank account. The incident was documented and a case report was provided to the victim.
• San Juan deputies responded to an alleged domestic violence assault/strangulation case. The incident was investigated, the suspect was identified, arrested, and booked on felony domestic violence assault.
Aug. 17
• San Juan deputies assisted Adult Protective Services by investigating a report of possible financial exploitation. The alleged victim was contacted and reported that no violation had occurred. The person appeared to be cogent and in possession of their faculties.
• A deputy on San Juan located some personal property at the intersection of First and Spring Streets and logged it into evidence.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a collision in which a rider fell off a moped near Lime Kiln State Park. EMS transported the rider to Peace Island Medical Center for evaluation.
• A deputy was dispatched to a citizen dispute near Eastsound. The reporting party just wanted to have the incident documented; thus, a statement was taken and a report was written.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a dog bite call. A Lopez citizen was bitten while attempting to break up a dog fight between family dogs. EMS treated the wound, and a report was taken.
Aug. 18
• San Juan deputies responded to a court order violation. The allegation was investigated and probable cause was developed for arrest. The suspect was not located, and the report was forwarded to the prosecutor.
