A woman and her grandson were shaken but escaped with only minor injuries following a single-car collision near the intersection of Douglas Road and Madden Lane that nearly toppled a power pole and left residents on the southwest side of San Juan Island temporarily without power.

According to Sheriff Bill Cumming, the woman was westbound on Douglas Road when she apparently lost control of her Ford Explorer at about 2:45 p.m. and the tires of her vehicle veered into a ditch that parallels the road. The vehicle traveled about 10 yards with its tires in the ditch and then slammed into a power pole with enough force that it severed the base of the wooden pole in two. The collision remains under investigation.

The driver of the vehicle, Carol Ford, suffered a lower-leg injury, Cumming said.

With live transmission wires and the top half of the power pole dangling precariously overhead, Ford and her grandson remained in the vehicle for roughly 20 minutes after the collision as a precaution. They were helped out of the vehicle by a team of paramedics shortly after a crew from Orcas Power and Light Cooperative arrive at the scene and were able to “ground” the transmission wires.

Damage to the power pole temporarily knocked out power to the southwest side of San Juan Island for about an hour. About 10 homes on Douglas Road, those near the crash site, were still without power at about 4:30 p.m.

Officials at OPALCO anticipate power will be fully restored by about 7:30 p.m.
