San Juan Community Theatre’s summer musical theatre camp is putting on Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.,” on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 18-19 at 7 p.m.
Director Penelope Haskew and a cast of more than 35 island actors, ages seven to 16, hope to impress the audience after three weeks of rehearsing. The production is based on the Academy award winning film about Aladdin – a young street urchin and his quest for the love of a princess, Jasmine. Haskew says that the cast of children generally makes the production go smoother.
“Children are much more accommodating [than adults,]” Haskew said. “Adults come with their own ideas that are much harder to work around.”
This is the second year of the San Juan Island musical theatre camp and Haskew hopes to instill several skills in her students, including working cooperatively, problem solving, and having discipline to push through a project with delayed gratification.
“It’s not about turning kids into pro actors.” Haskew said, “But teaching kids how to work together towards a common good.”
The Business Partner for the production is King’s Market. All tickets are $5. The SJCT box office is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.sjctheatre.org.
