Got a good idea for a radio show? Then you’re time has come.
San Juan Island’s community radio station, KSJU FM 91.9, is now certified by the IRS as a non-profit organization and, as such, can accept tax-deductible donations. That certification establishes a framework for program sponsorship and brings the locally-run station one giant step closer to achieving its goal of broadcasting locally-produced radio programs, according to Jodi Calhoun, director of events and underwriting for the station’s board of directors.
“With our 501-C3 IRS data ready, KSJU FM 91.9 can now accept tax deductible donations, such as the $400 donation by Ernest Pugh which paid for the 501 filing fee,” Calhoun said in a press release. “Thanks Ernest.”
Up next for the station’s underwriting campaign is an auction hosted by long-time local auctioneer Michael Adams. The station’s board of directors are encouraging islanders to donate items for bid at the upcoming auction, slated for a date in October that has yet to be determined, and the proceeds of which will help the board in its effort to match a startup grant the station received earlier this year.
With its goal of on-air broadcasts now in sight, KSJU board member Michael Calhoun offers these ideas for getting your music, show or idea on the air. The key steps, Calhoun noted, will include creating a demo CD and securing a sponsor who’s willing to underwrite your program. He suggests playing the CD-demo for family and friends, and then using their feedback to fine-tune your idea.
“Are they laughing? Are they supposed to be laughing,” he said. “You have time to get these kinks out of your productions, get an underwriter to pay for on-air time, and get this show to us in a broadcast-quality media. These CDs will be considered by the (station’s board of directors) for our streaming-site, and eventually may be played on the air.”
