Mount Baker Boys Scouts of America Scout Master of the Year for 2016 Chris Hallock is helping his troop have some of the same adventures he had as a young scout.
At the age of 16, Hallock trekked through the rugged northern New Mexico wilderness at Philmont Scout Ranch, the Boy Scouts of America’s largest high adventure base.
He is now hoping to take his troop, including his own sons Kenny, 14, and Christopher, 16, and his nephew Dakota Gabler-Brown, 15.
This Saturday, April 9 the troop is hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser at Paideia School in Friday Harbor from 9 a.m. to noon to raise money for their trip.
The boys need about $800 each, plus the fees for ranch activities which include a 42-mile backpacking trip with stops at different camps along the way. Each camp is set up to resemble a certain time period where the boys will learn a scout approved activity. For example one stop is a gold mining town where actors portray the time period, teaching the boys about life during the gold mining years and how to actually mine and pan for gold. Other “camps” will focus on western lore, shotgun and rifle shooting and blacksmithing.
The grand finale is climbing Tooth of Time, a famous rock formation at Philmont Ranch which Hallock has climbed twice.
“When I took over the troop, we came up with sort of our dream plans of what we hoped to do and going to Philmont was one,” said Hallock. “Some of these boys have been working toward this since they were ten years old.”
The seven day trip is planned for Aug. 8. Trooper who will make the trip are Diego Anderson, Brian Flemming, Emron Geiser, Will Leeming, Quinn Lacramp, Dakota Gabler-Brown, Kenny and Christopher Hallock and Christine Minnie and Chris Hallock as troop leaders.
