San Juan County Sheriff’s Department is hosting two public meetings March 15 to notify the community that a Level 3 sex offender intends to move to San Juan Island at the end of the month. 

According to the sheriff’s department, David Stewart, convicted of first-degree rape of a child in Snohomish County in 2003, will be moving from Snohomish County to San Juan at the end of March. Stewart will be under supervision of the state Department of Corrections for 24 months following his release. He will be supervised by DOC’s Rob Dieckman from the agency’s office in Oak Harbor. 

The first of meeting begins at 4 p.m. at the Roche Harbor Resort Pavilion, followed by a meeting at the Mullis Community Senior Center, beginning at 6 p.m.

Law enforcement officials will be on hand to provide information about Stewart and to answer questions. Those attending include personnel from the sheriff’s department, the prosecuting attorney’s office and state Corrections. 

Level 3 sex offenders are considered at high-risk to reoffend, according to the state’s classification system. There are no Level 3 sex offenders registered as living in San Juan County, according to the sheriff’s office. There is one Level 2 sex offender and 18 Level 1 sex offenders, which, to the state, are considered low-risk to community saftey.
