James Stephen Hogan, a retired judge and former trustee of Central Washington University, died May 10 at his home in Yakima. He was 86.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Hogan of Yakima; sister, Jane Deymonaz of Seattle; children, Katherine Yokers of Yakima, Thomas Hogan of Snohomish, Molly Hogan of Friday Harbor, John Hogan of Goldsboro, N.C., Patrick Hogan of Maple Valley, and Timothy Hogan of Seattle; 13 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Judge Hogan was born in Buffalo, N.Y., moved with his parents and younger sister to the Yakima Valley in 1936, and graduated from Marquette High School in 1942. He served in the Army Air Corps in Europe until 1945.

In 1948, he married Jeanne Heitzman of Connell. He graduated from Gonzaga University in 1952 and they moved to Yakima, where he established his law practice and raised their family. Jeanne passed away in 1977.

He was a judge of the Municipal Court and Justice Court of Yakima Precinct and the City of Yakima. In 1977, he was appointed by Gov. Dixie Lee Ray to the Board of Trustees of Central Washington University, and served as Wapato Municipal Court judge. He served as Exalted Ruler of the Elks in 1982-83 and was a life member of the VFW, Eagles, Moose, Kiwanis, and Footprinters.

In 1989, James married Esther Gillespie in Yakima. He continued to practice law until his retirement in 1998. James and Esther then enjoyed traveling, especially cruises.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Melvina Hogan; his wife, Jeanne; and his son, Michael.

Services were held in Yakima on May 18.
