Dennis Hazelton, 65, is retiring as Friday Harbor port director for U.S. Customs and Border Protection Service.
A retirement salute is planned Saturday, 4 p.m., in American Legion Post 163 downstairs. The event is open to the public.
Hazelton has been a Customs officer since 1966 and was head of the port for 18 years.
Customs and Border Protection Service Officer Tom Barnes is acting port director.
Hazelton said he plans to stay on the island. In fact, he said he’s been “pressed into service” — at Bountiful Herbs, his wife Gayle’s business growing culinary herbs and making lotions, salves and soaps.
