Harriet Woodward Bauer died on Saturday, Feb. 6, in a Hospice House in Kirkland.
Harriet and her ex-husband Wolf Bauer spent years on their property on San Juan Island, beginning in 1936 when Wolf was the chief engineer at Roche Harbor. They formed and entertained a kayak club who often met on the “Bauery.” This group still meets after 60 years.
Harriet was an avid outdoorswoman who hiked, skied and kayaked on many rivers and ocean inlets in “foldboats,” the kayaks of the 1940s. She also had many interesting hobbies including wine making, bookbinding, goat raising, and curling.
Her lifelong best friend was Susan Meredith, who died a few days before her.
She is survived by her two sons, Laurence G. Bauer and Rocky Bauer, and her twin grandchildren, Sara and Laura Bauer of San Juan Island.
