Finally, a good excuse to not shave. Grow a beard that would rival the gentlemen’s in the photograph, and you could win your own place in town history.

Island Rec: Celebrate the town’s 100th by going hirsute

Finally, a good excuse to not shave. Grow a beard that would rival the gentlemen’s in the photograph, and you could win your own place in town history.

Island Rec is sponsoring the Centennial Celebration Beard Growing Contest. Prizes will be awarded for the blackest, whitest, reddest, longest and wildest beards.

Registration is Sept. 12, 1-5 p.m. at Island Rec; on Sept. 13 at the Farmers Market; and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 12 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 13 at Windjammer Barbershop on Jeri’s Mall.

The contest is open to all ages; there is no fee to enter.

Contestants must be clean-shaven when registering; Island Rec will take a photo of each registrant. Mustaches are OK to have at registration.

During the contest, beards may not be colored, however, trimming and styling is allowed.

Judging will take place on Feb. 9 at the Town of Friday Harbor’s Birthday Celebration. Awards will be given for blackest beard, whitest beard, reddest beard, longest beard and wildest beard; two Judge’s Choice awards will be presented too.

The prizes: gift certificates for dinner for two at six different local restaurants: Bella Luna Restaurant, China Pearl Restaurant, Downriggers, Front Street Ale House, Haley’s Bait Shop & Grill, and Peppermill Seafood & Steakhouse.

Five months without shaving — if you can do it, you can win.
