Galt receives Lions’ Melvin Jones Fellowship
Don Galt, former president of the San Juan Lions Club, has received the organization’s Melvin Jones Fellowship.

The fellowship, named for the founder of Lions Club International, is an honor given to individuals who contribute the equivalent of $1,000 to Lions Club International Foundation.

Galt started several Lions Club activities, such as supplying firewood to those in need and hosting the annual club barbecue.

He founded the Friday Harbor Athletic Association and spearheaded the development of the community sports fields at the end of Carter Avenue.

He served as chairman of the San Juan Senior Advisory Council. He regularly raises money for eyesight preservation and research during the Lions Club’s White Cane Days. He regularly plays piano for residents of Islands Convalescent Center.

In the winter, he helps distribute food baskets.

Galt and his wife, Donna, celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this year. They have three adult children, Don, Kelly and Sandra.

Hair salons raise $1,347 for Banry Fund
A fund-raiser by Christy’s and Tookie’s raised $1,347 for the Banry Fund.

The fund-raiser was in June. The money was deposited by Chris DeFillips into the Banry Fund account at Whidbey Island Bank.

The fund was established to help defray the costs of home modifications the family must make to accommodate the mobility challenges of two family members.
