Kasey Rasmussen, 12, of Friday Harbor has qualified for the state Geography Bee in Tacoma for the second consecutive year.

Kasey, a seventh-grader at Friday Harbor Middle School, is a daughter of Kris and Scott Rasmussen. She won her first local geography bee as a sixth-grader, advanced to the state bee and lost in a preliminary round.

Kasey won her second local geography bee title on Dec. 9. She and other middle-school winners in Washington state then took written exams, with the top 100 finishers advancing to the state bee. Kasey was notified March 10 that she again qualified for state.

The state bee is April 3 at Stadium High School in Tacoma. The winner of the state bee will advance to the National Geographic Society’s Geography Bee in Washington, D.C.

Kasey hopes to carry the Friday Harbor torch again to the nation’s capital; Griffin Bay School’s Zach Reshovsky, a four-time state qualifier, competed in the national bee in 2008.

Kasey is an honor roll student and an avid reader, her favorite books being “Eragon” and the “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” series.
