Free composting workshops are scheduled March 7 and 8 on the islands. The dates are incorrect in the advertisement on page 8A of the Feb. 18 Journal.
The workshops are March 7, 8:30-11:30 a.m., Orcas Island Senior Center; March 7, 1:30-4:30 p.m., Mullis Community Senior Center; and March 8, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Lopez Island Elementary School.
Learn how to compost food and yard waste to build healthy productive soil with improved water-holding capacity. Get ideas for managing brush piles as wildlife habitat. Purchase your own composter at reduced cost. Save money on your trash disposal bill while saving landfill space and reducing methane emissions.
Bring your lunch and refreshments. This will be a “zero waste” event, so participants are asked to take back their own trash or choose reusable and recyclable materials.
The workshops are sponsored by the San Juan County Solid Waste Division, WSU Extension Master Gardeners, WSU Ag Program, and San Juan Islands Conservation District with grant funding from the state Department of Ecology.
