You’re as “Welcome as the Flowers in May” at the free annual Ferry Sing, hosted by Island Chordsmen Plus on June 23.

The barbershoppers will sing their way from Friday Harbor to Orcas aboard the interisland ferry, picnic at Orcas Landing, then sing their way back to Friday Harbor.

They will be joined by a ferryload of islanders, visitors and the Sound Vibrations, San Juan Island’s women’s barbershop/jazz group.

Baritone Dan Drath, Island Chordsmen Plus president, said this will be his sixth Ferry Sing and he invites everyone to “come sing with a group whose only purpose is harmony.” He said the sing is highly

informal.

Apart from the group’s regular repertoire of old and new favorites like “Georgia on My Mind,” “Danny Boy,” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” Drath said, director Angel Michaels usually leads a community singalong.

Tenor Jan Schubert, a first-time ferry singer last year, said people “get right up and sing with us, mostly the melody, which is what most people know, sometimes an octave higher or lower.”

Fellow tenor Roz Casad added, “The most fun is when other riders stand with us and sing. That’s the reason we do it, to enjoy ourselves and share the harmony with other people.”

The ferry leaves Friday Harbor at 5:35 p.m., arrives at Orcas Landing at 6:15, and returns at 7:40 to be back in Friday Harbor at 8:20.

“The whole thing is very low stress,” Don Leff said. “We sit at the picnic benches above the ferry landing on Orcas, eat, enjoy the great view.”

This somewhat Sentimental Journey is BYOP (bring your own picnic). Picnic goodies are available at the Orcas Landing General Store.

The Ferry Sing and the ferry rides are free.
