The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.
August 7
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a call about a theft; the investigation continues.
• A deputy stopped a driver on Orcas Road. The driver was subsequently issued citations for speeding – 52 mph in a posted 35 mph zone – and for not having a valid operator’s license with identification.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of the theft of several campaign signs. The suspect vehicle was located and 18 signs were located.
• A deputy on Orcas responded to a possible protection order violation. After looking over the order it was found no violation had occurred.
August 8
• A deputy on Orcas responded to reports of a person yelling for help. A patrol vessel was launched and found a vehicle on the rocks below Deer Harbor Road, with an injured occupant outside the vehicle. Orcas Fire and EMS extricated the victim from the scene, who was then flown to the mainland for care.
• A San Juan deputy took a report of fraud after a person called the station saying they were defrauded out of funds. The caller added that they had contacted their bank to stop the transfer. At the time of the report, no suspect information was available.
• A deputy on Orcas responded to an accident with possible injury near Deer Harbor. The driver was arrested for DUI and released with a criminal citation and a court date the following day. A report was sent to the Department of Licensing.
• Lopez deputies were dispatched to a welfare check and contacted the individual.
August 9
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a report of trespassing.
• On Lopez, a deputy responded to a dog-at-large complaint and issued the dog’s owner an at-large warning letter.
• A Lopez resident called regarding a possible harassment of a third party on Facebook. Since the posts were deemed not criminal, no further action was required.
August 10
• While on routine patrol, a Lopez deputy came across a vehicle blocking half the northbound lane on Fisherman Bay Road. The vehicle was unattended and the deputy issued the vehicle’s owner a citation for parking in the roadway.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of lost property.
• A deputy on San Juan, on their way to a report of a driver doing donuts, stopped the driver of a vehicle for displaying vehicle under glow, traveling 46 mph in a posted 25 mph speed zone, and driving left of center. The driver was ultimately arrested for driving under the influence.
August 11
• An Orcas deputy took possession of a wallet that was found on the island, and booked it into evidence for safekeeping.
• A Lopez deputy was contacted by a citizen who reported his kayak had been stolen from a local marina. The investigation is ongoing.
August 12
• Lopez residents reported the sound of large explosions from San Juan or the peninsula area. The source is currently unknown.
• Deputies were contacted about an animal problem on San Juan. Since the person was reporting a problem with a neighbor’s dog, deputies issued the neighbor a dog warning letter.
• A Lopez deputy was called about illegal camping in a village park. The person who was camping was removed and told not to return. The deputy also verified that the involved person is currently in contact with service providers.
• A deputy on San Juan conducted a traffic stop because the driver made an illegal left turn where prohibited, by a sign at Nichols Street and Argyle Avenue. The driver was given a verbal warning for making an illegal left turn.
• A deputy responded to a call about a dog bite and contacted the victim who was being treated at the medical clinic on Orcas.
• Deputies on San Juan responded to a cold domestic incident. The incident evolved into a smoke investigation, and then the individual armed themselves with a knife and went into a bathroom. Subsequently, the individual was safely taken into protective custody.
• Deputies on San Juan responded to a report of a domestic incident that was ultimately a health crisis involving a juvenile. The individual was medically flown off the island for further care.
August 13
• On Orcas, a citizen turned in a firearm over to deputies for destruction. The firearm was placed in safekeeping.
• An Orcas deputy responded to a call about a possible fraud. Following an investigation deputies found the reporting party had indeed received several scam medicare phone calls, and had not reported any loss of revenue.
• Deputies responded to a report of theft from an island business in Friday Harbor. The individual adamantly denied stealing, however, the theft was captured on security camera footage and the item was located. The individual was then booked into jail for theft in the third degree.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a domestic incident. After the deputy talked to the people involved it was determined to be a verbal argument.
