San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:
May 22: An Orcas Island man was tracked down and arrested for DUI following investigation of a single-car crash in the 5000 block of Orcas Road. The 51-year-old, who had left the scene at the time an officer arrived at about 7 p.m., was taken into custody at his Eastsound apartment about an hour later.
June 5: An Orcas Island couple pointed fingers at one another in an investigation of the fraudulent use of a state-issued DSHS debit card and the disappearance of a state-issued cell-phone. The intended recipient of the card and the phone, a 29-year-old man identified as homeless, claims his 21-year-old girlfriend is responsible for withdrawing $200 from the debit card account. She reportedly denies using the car and claims that the phone never arrived at her Green Cow Road address.
June 7: An Orcas Island man was ticketed after his pit bull reportedly pounced on a neighbor’s dog and then bit a 64-year-old woman on the hand as she tried to rescue her Chihuahua. The 32-year-old man was ticketed for allowing his dog to run loose in the wake of the attack, which occurred in the 200 block of the Roehl’s Hill Road neighborhood.
June 8: A Florida man could face prosecution for failing to registered his boat following a “courtesy inspection” by authorities at Stuart Island’s state park at Provost Harbor. The 66-year-old reportedly failed to register his vessel with the state for the past two-plus years.
— An Orcas Island teen accused of filling up a fountain drink, valued at $1.07, and leaving an Eastsound grocery store without paying for it was arrested in an apparent case of shoplifting. The 16-year-old boy was taken into custody at about 3 p.m.
June 11: A cow was struck and killed in a late-night collision with Toyota station wagon near the intersection of Beaverton Valley and Boyce roads.The driver, a 22-year-old San Juan Island woman, escaped the collision without injury. She reportedly struck the bovine with a fatal blow as she rounded a bend and was blinded by the high-beams of the cow owner’s truck, who was trying at the time to retrieve it.
June 16: The skipper of a 18-foot homemade “roundabout” reportedly beached his vessel on the grounds of Camp Nor’wester, ran into the woods and hid for awhile, and then threatened camp staff who confronted about the incursion as he climbed back onboard and sped away from the Johns Island campground in erratic fashion. The man was reportedly intoxicated and belligerent, and the serial numbers of the boat he was piloting were provided to local authorities by camp staff.
June 17: A Leavenworth man was arrested for misdemeanor pot possession following an inspection of the boat that he and three friends were making a return trip from Canada in by US Customs agents in Friday Harbor. The 27-year-old, who reportedly acknowledged that the small amount of marijuana and paraphernalia found onboard the boat were his, was taken into custody at about 5 p.m.
June 18: An Orcas Island woman believes her nemesis in a long-running property dispute, a 53-year-old man, may be responsible for the bizarre calling card left on her lawn — a hand-written note on a pink piece of paper, attached to a witch’s costume, which together were wrapped around a bag of ice. She reportedly discovered the following day that the cable supplying power to her well had been cut.
June 19: The driver of a pickup that went off the road, over an embankment, through a stand of small fir trees and then crashed into a picnic table following an early morning single-car collision in 1000 block of Terrace Drive was not nowhere to be found when an officer arrived at the scene at about 2:30 a.m. The keys were left in the ignition of the pickup, which reportedly belongs to a San Juan Island man who lives near the scene of the crash.
— Smoldering embers, two pieces of charred wood and the lingering odor of petroleum products were discovered outside the home of an Orcas Island couple in an apparent case of arson. The woman at the Maden Lane home reportedly spied someone silhouetted against the firelight but was unable to distinguish any detaisl before the intruder left the scene at about 1:30 a.m.
June 21: Investigation of a late-night burn pile and a $20,000 warrant led to the arrest of a San Juan Island man wanted by Seattle authorities in connection with a case of domestic violence assault. Identified as homeless, the 28-year-old, who, despite court orders reportedly had a beer in hand at the time local authorities arrived at the scene, was taken into custody at a home in the 900 block of Cattle Point Road at about 11:30 p.m.
— A San Juan Island man claims he was attacked by a neighbor’s pit bull and that it grabbed the sleeve of his shirt in its jaws when he went to the man’s home to confront him about an invasion by the dog on his property. The dog, labeled as potentially dangerous by local authorities nine months ago, reportedly tried to attack the man’s wife several days earlier during an unescorted foray onto the couple’s property in the 1900 block of Cattle Point Road.
June 22: A 32-year-old Friday Harbor man is the prime suspect in the apparent theft of a credit card that’s used to buy gasoline. The card, which disappeared from a San Juan Island woman’s car, was reportedly used once in Friday Harbor and once in Oregon to purchase 330 gallons of gas.
June 23: Failure to heed a traffic control device prompted the arrest of a San Juan Island man for DUi following a late-night traffic stop in Friday Harbor. The 27-year-old, who was pulled over near the intersection of Argyle Avenue and Nicols Street shortly before midnight, was also ticketed for disobeying the traffic control device.
