On July 14, Laura Tretter will step down as director of San Juan Island Library after a four-year tenure at the top.

Tretter on June 23 announced she has accepted a position with Bayfield Public Library, located near Durango, Colo.

Tretter, who became library director in 2006, is credited with helping to raise the library’s profile through the development of programs that appeal to a wide range of interests. With Tretter at the helm, the library saw gains in daily visits, circulation and computer use, while, according to library officials, it remained fiscally sound as well.

In a press release announcing Tretter’s resignation, the library’s board of trustees noted that it already is seeking candidates, regionally and beyond, in search of her replacement.

“In the meantime, Melina and our great library staff will work hard to keep everything going during the transition,” Tretter said in the release.

The library will host a farewell reception for Tretter July 14, her final day on the job, from 5-6 p.m.; the reception is open to the public.

“My hope is that I have given half as much to the library and community as has been given to me,” Tretter said. “Outside of work, I will miss many of the small, simple things about life here … But I’m already lining up new adventures in Colorado and convincing people to visit me out there.”
