San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputy Ron Krebs is a candidate for the department’s top job—sheriff.

Krebs, who moved to the San Juans in 2006, served in the Marine Corps, including tours of duty in Kuwait in Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He is president of the Sheriff’s Guild and the department’s representative to the Washington Council of Police and Sheriffs.

He is also a field training officer tasked with training newly hired officers, and he instructs boater safety classes.

“Our Sheriff needs to be someone who can, and will, communicate with the public,” Krebs said in a press release announcing his candidacy. “San Juan County deserves a Sheriff who is involved with the community, who will work hand-in-hand with all organizations, and who will work tirelessly to assure we have the safest community possible.”

The Sheriff supervises a department with an overall budget of nearly $4.9 million, including $2.7 million for the Sheriff, $1 million for dispatch, $800,00 for Emergency Management and nearly $400,000 for the jail. The sheriff manages 21 deputies, detectives and field corrections officers, nine dispatch employees, and four other employees.

An elected, non-partisan position, the sheriff earns an annual salary of $103,595.
