San Juan County could become a year-round fireworks free-zone, depending on the outcome of a public hearing and decision of the County Council June 3.

The council voted earlier to bring the pending legislation to a public hearing following a request by the association of local fire chiefs.

If approved, the ban would take effect beginning in 2009. It would prohibit the use of all so-called “consumer” fireworks, including those considered “safe and sane,” like sparklers, snakes, ground-spinners and pinwheels, year round. Fireworks which explode or fly in the air, such as firecrackers and Roman candles, already are prohibited by local law.

Consumer fireworks are currently allowed only on July 4.

If adopted, violators would be subject to fines and possible criminal penalties.

The public hearing begins at 11:25 a.m. in the council hearing room at the Legislative Building, 55 Second St., Friday Harbor.
