Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 18, the airport in Friday Harbor will be closed nightly because of construction work, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., until Sept. 26. An additional night closure is slated for sometime in early October.

Port of Friday Harbor officials anticipate that reconstruction of the airport taxiway will be complete by the end of the September. Various other upgrades of airport facilities are under way as well.

Construction crews will be installing electrical utilities and signs near the runway during the week that the airport is closed at night; the runway will open for emergency services, if needed.

Meanwhile, the Friday Harbor Port Commission will conduct a “special meeting”, Wednesday, Sept. 19, beginning at 5 p.m., at the port administration office, 204 Front St.

The meeting begins in “executive session” for discussion of pending litigation, according to the meeting agenda, and then continues with public comment period, a consent agenda, approval of vouchers, action items, approval of a legal settlement and a resolution establishing reporting for the airport’s stormwater permit. Also on the agenda, change order requests for additional work by Trimaxx Construction, and by Reid Middleton.
