Coast Salish storyteller Johnny Moses visits San Juan Island Library Saturday

Coast Salish storyteller Johnny Moses will visit the San Juan Island Library on Saturday, 6 p.m., in a free event open to the public. Moses, whose traditional name is Whis.stem.men.knee (Walking Medicine Robe), lives on the Tulalip reservation. He carries the Si.Si.Wiss (sacred breath, sacred life) medicine teachings and healing ceremonies of his Northwest Coast people. He is a master storyteller, oral historian, traditional healer and respected spiritual leader.

Moses, whose traditional name is Whis.stem.men.knee (Walking Medicine Robe), lives on the Tulalip reservation. He carries the Si.Si.Wiss (sacred breath, sacred life) medicine teachings and healing ceremonies of his Northwest Coast people. He is a master storyteller, oral historian, traditional healer and respected spiritual leader.

He leads workshops on Northwest Coast Native culture and spirituality throughout the U.S. and Canada, and is fluent in eight Native Northwest languages and in Native sign language. He teaches the Samish and Snohomish languages.

Moses has shared traditional and contemporary stories with thousands of people, including audiences at the prestigious National Storytelling Festival, as well as at Lincoln Center, the University of California, University of Washington, Naropa Institute and the New York Open Center.

Library hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 1-5 p.m.

Library cards are free to island residents with proof of residency.
