Early results from the Nov. 8 election offered little certainty as to the makeup of two of three charter review panels that will represent San Juan Island in the coming year.

Of eight candidates vying for three positions on the District 1 team, San Juan South, former county clerk Mary Jean Cahail drew the largest number of votes, with 552 and 19.3 percent the 2,864 ballots counted. Turnout among District 1 voters totaled 78 percent as of Tuesday’s count. More ballots will be tabulated Wednesday.

Trailing Cahail are Gordy Petersen, 483 votes, 16.9 percent; Maureen See, 482 votes, 16.8 percent; George Johnson, 398 votes, 14 percent, and David Meiland, 326 votes, 11.3 percent.

Th three candidates vying for three positions of District 3, which encompasses the town of Friday Harbor, will join the review commission as winners of uncontested races.

In the race for four positions in District 2, North San Juan, Janice Peterson leads nine candidates, with 529 votes and 14 percent of 3,705 ballots cast. Other top vote-getters include, Ron Zee, 476 votes, 12.9 percent, Bob Levinson, 461 votes, 12.4 percent, John Manning, 426 votes, 11.5 percent and Bill Watson, 423 votes, 11.4 percent.

In other contested races… Former high school principal Ralph Hahn grabbed a commanding lead in the run for post No. 3 on the San Juan Island School District board of directors. Hahn led first-time candidate Robin DeLaZerda 1,525 votes to 946, garnering 61 percent of 2,471 votes cast. Jack McKenna also took a decisive lead over Callie McKay in the race for the school board’s No. 5 post, collecting 1,517 votes, 65 percent, compared to Mckay’s 820.

In the lone contested race for a seat on the San Juan Island Park and Recreation District Commission, Jacquelyn Reiff collected 1,471 votes, 70.7 percent, to outpace rival Fred Schaller.
