Artists Chinmayo and Beth Spadafora are enlisting volunteers for the Centennial Tile Mural Project.
Participants will create a series of tiled panels painted with ceramic glazes in a pictorial design depicting the history of Friday Harbor and San Juan Island.
There will be 20 panels in total, each measuring 3 feet by 5 feet. They will be mounted on the long wall that is on Blair Avenue between the Post Office and Spring Street.
“The Town of Friday Harbor is having its centennial in 2009 and what better way to celebrate than by getting lots and lots of citizens together working on a creative art project that will beautify our town?,” Chinmayo and Spadafora wrote in an e-mail.
“The project is being introduced to the community at the San Juan County Fair. The project will be ongoing for a year with the target date for completion being August 2009.”
To participate, e-mail centennialmural@yahoo.com or call Chinmayo at 378-2523, or Spadafora at 378-4368. You can also visit them at their fair booth next to the 4-H building.
Chinmayo and Spadafora have spearheaded three local tile murals projects: at Spring Street Landing, above the entryway to Friday Harbor Elementary School, and at the entrance to the San Juan County Fairgrounds.
