Have you noticed the microplastics at Jackson Beach? These tiny bits of plastic harm our marine ecosystem, affecting forage fish, salmon, seabirds, and even killer whales. That’s why Plastic Free Salish Sea is asking local businesses and community members to help clean up the beaches at monthly events!
Plastic Free Salish Sea – a local coalition of environmentally-focused organizations – is excited to partner with local businesses to organize monthly beach clean-ups at Jackson Beach. We’ll supply the gear and materials needed; all you need to do is show up! Beach clean-ups will be held on the first Sunday of every month from 11 a.m. to noon at Jackson Beach starting this Fall with our first cleanup hosted by the Orca Network!
For Businesses
If you are a local business or organization that would like to lead a beach clean-up, please email katiej@sanjuancountywa.gov. All you need to do is promote the event and get people to show up with your business or organization on the month that you choose. All materials and clean-up supplies will be provided.
For Everyone
All community members are welcome to join these beach clean-ups. Keep an eye out for the monthly schedule and other opportunities to get involved!
About Plastic-Free Salish Sea
Plastic Free Salish Sea is a coalition of organizations that includes Friends of the San Juans, San Juan County Department of Environmental Stewardship, San Juan County Marine Resources Committee, and The Exchange on Orcas Island. Our mission is to unify and mobilize Salish Sea communities toward actively participating in the reduction of plastic waste in our waterways and landscapes. We do this through community outreach, education, and engagement focused on decreasing plastic use, improving responsible disposal methods and practices, and motivating clean-up events and actions. We hope you can join us!
