Boat on fire at Roche Harbor; firefighters, fire boat, sheriff’s boat respond to the scene

A boat moored at Roche Harbor is reported fully engulfed in flames. Early reports are that the fire spread to two more boats. San Juan Island Fire Department, the sheriff's boat Guardian and fire boat Confidence are at the scene or en route. Vessel Assist is also en route. The U.S. Coast Guard has been notified.

2:47 P.M.: Sheriff’s boat Guardian has arrived at Roche Harbor. Sheriff Bill Cumming reports one boat fully engulfed.

3:06 P.M.: Sufficient emergency personnel are reportedly on the scene of the boat fire at Roche Harbor.

3:39 P.M.: Sheriff’s boat Guardian is reportedly leaving Roche Harbor.

3:50 P.M.: The U.S. Coast Guard issued this statement:

The Coast Guard responded to a report of two boats on fire at Roche Harbor Marina, Wednesday.

Coast Guard Group Port Angeles, Wash., received a call at 2:35 p.m. from the San Juan County 911 dispatch reporting that approximately two boats were on fire in Roche Harbor.

Coast Guard Station Bellingham, Wash., diverted a 33-foot response boat from a patrol.

The San Juan County Fire Department launched a fire boat, the Friday Harbor Fire Department launched land assets and Vessel Assist launched a boat to the scene.

The Coast Guard and Vessel Assist are providing a safety zone around the burning boats and the Friday Harbor Fire Department is conducting the fire fighting.

No people were reported to be on board the boats. A sheen around the two boats has been reported. The cause of the incident is under investigation.

It’s the second boating mishap at Roche Harbor in two months. Sept. 9, a 64-year-old Marysville man escaped with minor injuries when an explosion blew out the cabin windows and cracked the hull of his 25-foot Bayliner during an apparent fueling mishap at the Roche Harbor fuel dock.
