The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.
Apr. 15
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a traffic hazard near Eastsound. There was a person found directing traffic when the deputy arrived.
• A San Juan deputy stopped a motorcyclist for traveling 58 mph in a posted 45 mph speed zone. The motorcyclist was issued citations for speeding; for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle; for not having insurance or registration; and for not having motorcycle endorsement. The driver also received a warning.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a report of an unwanted person in the West Beach area. The person was removed and transported to Friday Harbor for evaluation.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a theft on Stuart Island. The investigation is ongoing.
• A Lopez deputy took a report of vandalism to a parked car.
• A deputy was called to Hummel Lake on Lopez on a report of a boater possibly in distress. An adult with children in a rowboat was observed on the lake, paddling around without any apparent difficulty. All were wearing life jackets. No further action was necessary.
• A deputy responded to a citizen dispute in Friday Harbor. One person was issued a trespass letter and a report was made.
• A Lopez resident called a deputy after receiving unwanted and inappropriate messages and threats. The deputy took a report of harassment and presented the resident with options.
• An Orcas deputy responded to a report of business in violation of the governor’s pandemic orders. No crime was discovered.
• A deputy on Orcas responded to a call regarding a possible scam.
• San Juan deputies were dispatched to a report of a fight. The incident was investigated and found to be a verbal neighbor dispute. The involved parties were advised to handle the situation civilly.
• A deputy investigated a harassment complaint after a Lopez resident reported suspicious activity on her property. It was believed the suspect was retaliating against the victim after the victim posted an innocuous comment on a social media site.
• A Lopez deputy stopped a person operating an All-Terrain Vehicle on Center Road. The operator was issued a citation for not wearing a helmet; a warning for speeding; and several licensing and equipment violations regarding an ATV on the roadway.
• A deputy is investigating a report of a theft on Orcas.
Apr. 16
• A deputy on Orcas was dispatched to an abandoned vehicle in Eastsound. A 24-hour towing notice was attached to the window. Two days later, April 18, the vehicle had not been moved and was impounded.
• Deputies conducted a welfare check of a person on Lopez Island. The subject was advised of available services.
• Orcas deputies responded to a welfare check in Eastsound. The person was assisted with getting in contact with help on the island.
• Deputies investigated a theft of mail on Decatur Island. Suspects entered an unlocked community mail building and took packages belonging to community members.
• A deputy responded to a Lopez residence because of a loose dog complaint. The dog owner was located and a report was completed.
• A deputy on San Juan observed a driver with a suspended license operating a motor vehicle. A probable cause statement will be sent to the prosecutor for charging.
• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a citizen dispute. The incident was investigated and a report was generated.
Apr. 17
• The reporting deputy was contacted about a malicious mischief call. The caller reported his mailbox was damaged overnight.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a traffic hazard near Eastsound. The hazard was located and cleared.
• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle because their passenger was not wearing a seat belt. The passenger was issued a citation for not wearing a seat belt.
• A San Juan deputy arrested a driver for driving with a suspended driver’s license. The driver was also issued a citation for failing to notify the Department of Licensing of an address change.
• Sheriff K9 deputy Sucia sniffed out the odor of narcotics and alerted a San Juan deputy who then impounded the vehicle for a drug investigation.
Apr. 18
• In Friday Harbor, the reporting deputy was dispatched to an unattended death. The death appeared natural and a report was made.
• An Orcas deputy issued a driver a citation for driving 55 mph in a 35 mph zone.
• A deputy on Orcas was dispatched to a report of a suspicious person in Eastsound. The person was located and assistance was given.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a suspicious callback near Doe Bay.
• An Orcas deputy responded to a call in the Rosario area about a possible violation of the governor’s Stay-at-Home order. The parties were educated and informed of their rights and given copies of the San Juan County Health Officer’s order as well.
• A deputy was dispatched to a court order violation in the Eastsound area. A report was taken and the investigation is ongoing.
• A deputy was dispatched to the sound of weapon noise near Eastsound. When the deputy arrived there was no noise and no one was found in the area.
• A deputy was dispatched to a suspicious call near Eastsound. It was found that everything was OK and in order.
• A deputy on San Juan stopped a vehicle because a passenger was hanging out of a window. The passenger was issued a citation for not wearing a safety belt.
• A deputy on San Juan stopped a driver for driving with a suspended license. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license in the third degree and issued a citation for not having insurance.
Apr. 19
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a suspicious callback near Westsound. Information was gathered and a report was taken.
• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for speeding. The driver was issued a citation for driving 87 mph in a 45 mph speed zone.
• A deputy on Orcas was dispatched to a report of residential burglary. Items from the home were reported missing; the investigation is ongoing.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to possible trespassing near Map Corner. The suspicious person was found to be the property’s caretaker.
Apr. 20
• On San Juan a deputy was contacted about a fraud. The caller reported his name is being used by someone as an alias.
• A deputy was contacted about a suspicious circumstance. The caller reported that a contractor was contacted to demolish one of his rentals by someone from off island. No loss was incurred and a report was taken.
• Deputies were dispatched to a disrobed individual in the Eastsound area. The individual was contacted and asked to put on some clothes — they did.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a report of a barefoot woman being chased down the middle of the road by a male subject. It was reported that the woman was minimally dressed. The female matching the description was contacted and stated that no one was chasing her.
• A Lopez deputy was called after an old bone was exposed by erosion on an embankment. The bone was collected for further examination.
• A Lopez deputy was sent to a report of loud music at a residence. When the deputy arrived, the music was turned down and the people were asked to move inside the house.
Apr. 21
• A deputy on San Juan was contacted about a Fish and Game violation in the Stuart Island area. The person reported someone shooting at marine mammals. A report was taken and forwarded to the proper agency.
• A deputy was dispatched to a found property call at a local Eastsound business. The item was returned to its owner.
• A San Juan deputy was dispatched to a report of a juvenile problem. A juvenile was arrested for malicious mischief in the third degree – domestic violence.
