Arthur R. Lehwalder, born in Butte, Mont., in 1917, passed peacefully on May 29 at his home on Orcas Island. He led a full and active life and will be greatly missed.

Arthur was a decorated World War II veteran, having served in the Army Air Force as a B-29 co-pilot. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, a Presidential Citation and the Soldiers Medal.

Upon return from the war, he received a sociology degree from the University of Washington, which led him to his future career as a federal parole probation officer in Seattle, Wash. He was a dedicated member of the Theosophical Society. It was through this connection in 1937 that he first visited Camp Indralaya on Orcas Island and remained an active participant for 72 years.

Arthur was a devoted husband and father as well as a passionate lover of music, most especially the operas of Richard Wagner. He will be remembered for his warmth, humor and wonderfully compassionate nature.

He is survived by his six children, Julie Warnock, Chris Lehwalder, Heidi Lehwalder, Nancy Lehwalder, Franz Lehwalder and Debbie Lehwalder, six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, four siblings and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be announced later.
