Know your island walk explores the newly- acquired Mitchell Hill

On Saturday, Aug. 27, 1p.m., you can meet Mike Vouri, chief of interpretation and historian of the San Juan Island National Historical Park, to walk at newly-acquired Mitchell Hill.

Hikers meet at the English Camp main parking lot to car pool.

The trail is a dirt terrain trail  and approximately one and a half miles . The difficulty rating is “moderate plus.”

A film about food we shouldn’t eat

The movie “Forks over Knives” airs Saturday, Aug. 27, at San Juan Island Library, at 6 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Friday Harbor Seventh-day Adventist Church, San Juan Community Garden and the Vibrant Vegetarian Cooking Club.

The film examines the claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled or reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods.

It was featured recently on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” and received special attention on “The Dr. Oz Show.”

 

Benefit to help islander Terry Ogle

The upcoming benefit on Aug. 26, at the American Legion, aims to raise funds for the medical costs the Ogle family are facing.

Islander Terry Ogle  was recently diagnosed with stage four leukemia.

Ogle has lived in San Juan for 20 years and is known as a wood carver and watercolor artist.

There will be a salmon and steak dinner, music and live entertainment all for $25.

Tickets are sold at Be Chic, Market Chef and Spa d’ Bune.

Donations can also be made to the Terry Ogle Medical Benefit Account at Islanders Bank.

Weavers gather at English Camp

Weavers from throughout San Juan Island and Washington State will gather all day on Saturday Aug. 27 at the English Camp Parade Ground.

They will demonstrate how European and American Indian techniques melded to create woven objects and clothing unique to the Pacific Northwest.

Cowlitz Nation weaver Judy Bridges and Fort Nisqually interpreter and storyteller Karen Haas will show how it was done with all natural fibers, including wild reeds.

Recap of Island Rec’s ‘best out of three’ Volleyball Tournament

Island Rec’s held its second Adult Coed Beach Volleyball Tournament and it was an even bigger success this time around with sunny weather and 15 teams competing.

Six out of the 15 teams were from off island including Oregon, Olympia and Orcas Island.

The double elimination tournament started at 10 a.m. and ended at 5 p.m.

Johannes Krieger and Shawn Kleine won the crown and second place went to Sean Sultan, Travis Mager and Sarah Heeren. Third place went to Jordan Nash and Jordyn Taylor.

Krieger and Kleine lost in the first round to Sultan, Mager and Heeren, but ended up winning the losers’ bracket to come back, play and win best out of three.

Island Rec plans to host a tournament again next year.

The premier event sponsors were Salt Spray Window Cleaning and Juans Detailing, and Crystal Seas and Loea Designs made donations to the tournament.
