Elizabeth A. Barrett, 32, of Juneau, Alaska, was charged in San Juan County Superior Court on Feb. 22 with assault in the third degree – law enforcement officer, assault in the fourth degree – domestic violence, and attempting to disarm a law enforcement or corrections officer.

Barrett will go before Judge Kathryn Loring in an omnibus hearing at 9 a.m. on June 1, with a readiness hearing being held at 9 a.m. on June 15 and jury trial beginning 9 a.m. on June 25.

According to court documents, a San Juan Island deputy responded to a reported domestic dispute around 11 a.m. on Feb. 20. The caller, Barrett’s husband, told dispatch that Barrett was threatening him with a knife, and when the deputy arrived, he observed scratches on the caller’s neck and arms as well as teeth marks.

Barrett’s husband said that she had allegedly assaulted him, biting and scratching at his neck and arms, after he would not help her get dressed. She then grabbed a kitchen knife and walked toward him, according to court documents. He took the knife away from Barrett and called 911.

The deputy arrested Barrett for domestic violence and took her to the emergency room for evaluation, where she was deemed “fit for jail.” She allegedly reached for the officer’s taser, and when he grabbed Barrett’s arm to stop her from taking it, she squeezed her nails into his arm, causing broken skin.

A pre-charge domestic violence no-contact order was filed against Barrett on Feb. 20. The order allows Barrett to only have telephonic, electronic and written communication with her husband. They own a home in both Friday Harbor and Juneau.

Barrett’s previous convictions include assault – purposeful with reckless injury, and harassment – offensive physical contact, in March 2017 in Juneau.
