Staehlin is president for 2008-09
The Soroptimists of Friday Harbor reported a productive 2007-08 year under President Ellen Roberts.
This is a short list of the many things accomplished this year.
July 2007: Relay for Life, award for team raising the most money.
August 2007: Members manned the gates at the San Juan County Fair.
September: Beach clean-up at Jackson’s Beach. Face painting at a picnic for foster families.
October: Membership Recruitment Open House at Vinny’s Restaurant. First-time event with 70 people attending; more than half were guests.
November: Participation in the Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Cloth grocery bags purchased as environmental project, 150 donated to the local Food Bank.
December: Christmas project for local families, purchased $500 in gifts. Donated $300 to the Lions Club’s Christmas Santa Ship. Christmas Caroling at Islands Convalescent Center. Presented Women’s Opportunity Award.
January: Making a Diff-erence for Women Award presented to Kathy Eisenhauer of Grace Girls. Violet Richardson Award presented to Wynn Barnard, who was also selected as the regional winner. Sponsored a local female student’s participation in the Constitution speech competition; donated $150 to this American Legion project. Purchased medical flight insurance for a local family whose daughter has severe epilepsy, purchased two $200 gift certificates from local markets for the family.
February: Knowledge Bowl team came in second overall, first among service club teams. Donated $500 to San Juan Island Public Schools Foundation. Beach clean-up.
March: Saturday of Service Baby Shower, in-club collection of baby supplies for Family Resource Center. St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza at Yacht Club, raised more than $9,000 for the club’s annual projects and commitments. Notable Women’s Luncheon. Dog park fence community project, club donated $100 for a section of fence.
April: Purchased books for the high school library. Presented the Fellowship Award to Beth Helstien. Hosted Grant of Friendship visitor Saran Berete from Guinea. Financially supported 4-H Earth Day Calendar Project.
May: Children’s Festival; members made new costumes, decorated the gazebo, provided story-telling and costume parades at a cost of $700. Presented Youth of Distinction Award.
June: Presented scholarship to high school graduate.
