Wolverines softball beats the Braves

The Friday Harbor Wolverines softball team trounced the La Conner Braves Tuesday, April 9, in honor of coach Brian Lambright, who was unable to attend the game due to a health issue. The entire team wore a red ribbon in their hair as a tribute to him, and coach Kirk Holt donned a ribbon in his baseball hat.

“We were all really really motivated for our head coach. We wore the red bows for him, it’s his favorite color. We played hard for him,” senior pitcher Siri Landstum said.

Senior Grace Pauls was the first to score at the bottom of the first inning, and the runs kept on coming. Freshmen Sage Penwell and Olivia Germain, sophomores Bristol Halvorson, Rachel Starr and Fallon Taylor, juniors Bailee Lambright and Liz Cruz, and senior Thea Seitz were all among those that made it home that inning.

“It was crazy, we don’t usually get 11 runs in the first inning,” Landstrum said.

Holt added that the Wolverine starters batted twice in the first inning.

“Bailee Lambright had two hits, two RBIs and two stolen bases; Thea Seitz did as well,” Holt said. “For the most part, it was Laconner’s errors and walking us that gave us the runs. “

Pitcher Marcella Kirkland, a junior, was able to keep the Braves at bay in striking out three batters in a row during the top of the second inning. Sietz kicked the bottom of the second off by hitting a double, and the Wolverines were off and running once more.

Lambright, Cruz, Halvorson and freshmen Ella Perkins all came home, making the score at the end of the second inning, 18-0.

By the end of the third inning, the score was 20-0. The Braves did manage to get a couple runs home, but the final score was 20-2.

“Marcella Kirkland started pitching for us and had a good outing with five strikeouts .… Raylie ‘Noodles’ Miniken had another five. They both pitched well,” Holt said.

The lady Wolverines face Concrete in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13. The first game begins at 11:30 a.m. at Linde Field and the second game starts at 2 p.m. They face Darrington April 16, and La Conner April 19, both away games.
