It’s as if that display of pretty cupcakes had Shelby Dunn’s name on them.

The 5-year-old girl from Fremont, Calif. visited San Juan Community Theatre on Saturday with her family for Elegant Edibles, and wasn’t in the theater lobby for five minutes before picking the Easter goodies in the annual benefit bake sale.

Outside, David Bayley carried a sandwich board and an umbrella, inviting passers-by in from the winter-like chill and hail and into the warmth of the community theater lobby.

And in they came, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., for the CATS’ Elegant Edibles bake sale, the annual Easter event to benefit the community theater.

The event featured goodies made by “The Baker Boys,” volunteers from the community. This year’s Bakers Boys: John Aberle, Mark Aberle, Tom Barrett, David Bayley, Charlie Bodenstab, Brad Brown, Roy Clausen, Jim Corenman, Ed Greub, George Johnson, Chris Nelson, Dave Nichols, Don Pollard, Rich Peterson, David Ralston, Howard Schonberger, Ted Soares, Jim Specht, Ron Thurman, Dave Vanderwal, Jason Wood, and Jack Yelverton.

In addition to the Baker Boys’ treats, a variety of other goodies were available, including breakfast casseroles, breakfast rolls, coffee cakes, condiments (sauces, jams, jellies, etc.) candy, breads, cakes, cheesecakes, pies and cookies ­— all just in time for those family holiday brunches on Easter Sunday.

It was the first weekend community event leading up to Easter.

Island Rec is organizing a free “flashlight Easter egg hunt,” Saturday, 8:30-10 p.m. at the Friday Harbor High School track. Teens ages 12 and up are invited to bring a flashlight and a basket for a night of hunting for eggs (there is a treat in every egg) and group games. Roche Harbor is hosting egg dying and three Easter egg hunts. On Saturday, the public can dye eggs on the Roche Harbor Party Barge. The next day, Easter Sunday, brings the arrival of the Easter Bunny at 12:30 p.m. and the egg hunts at 1 p.m.

Children 3 and younger will hunt eggs in the rose garden; ages 4-6 will hunt eggs in the formal garden; ages 7-11 will hunt eggs in the upper half of the yellow brick road. Call 378-2155 for more information.

The annual Jackson Beach Egg Hunt is Easter Sunday at 1 p.m., at Jackson’s Beach. Get there quick, organizer Susan Risser said, “because the eggs go fast.”

Jackson’s Beach will be cordoned off into four sections which correspond to age groups: 0-3, 4-6, 7-9. 10-12. Prizes will be given to those who find special, plastic eggs hidden with the hard-boiled ones. “But no more than two plastic eggs per child,” said Risser, who wants to ensure that everyone gets a prize.

Although it costs nothing to join the hunt, Risser encourages each participant to donate one can of food for the Food Bank. Prizes for those plastic eggs come from a variety of Friday Harbor vendors, including Friday Harbor Drug, Ositos, and The Toy Box.

Easter Sunday dawns with the Sunrise Service at the Carter Ranch, 6:30 a.m. This is followed by the Deacon’s Breakfast and worship service at Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church. Communion will be given.

Easter Sunday Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Good Voyage, at 10:30 a.m. For Mass schedule at St. Francis Church, call 378-2910.

Islands Community Church’s traditional Easter Sunday service begins at 10:45 a.m., followed by an Easter egg hunt on the church grounds.

St. David’s Episcopal Church and the Lutheran Church of the San Juans will celebrate The Great Vigil of Easter on Saturday and Easter Sunday. Eucharist will be at 8 a.m.; Festival Eucharist will be at 10:30 a.m.
