Who will kiss the pig? Soroptimists are selling tickets for second annual ‘Kiss for the Cure’

The candidate with the most votes gets to kiss a pig. Say again? Yes, a real cute, pink, shy, 4-H pig.

The Soroptimists' "Sweet Sixteens" Relay for Life team will sell "vote tickets" at Soroptimist tables in the coming days. See them at MarketPlace at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 10, July 16 and July 17. They will also be at King's Market at 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 18.

The Soroptimists’ “Sweet Sixteens” Relay for Life team will sell “vote tickets” at Soroptimist tables in the coming days. See them at MarketPlace at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 10, July 16 and July 17. They will also be at King’s Market at 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 18.

Each $1 ticket will represent a vote for a potential pig-kisser. You can vote for as many contestants as you wish or put all your votes to one. There will also be a raffle item.

Who will be brave enough to kiss a pig? The candidates are: Pastor Archie Brooks, King’s Market manager Wes Corey, San Juan County Sheriff Bill Cumming, Friday Harbor Mayor Carrie Lacher, and San Juan Community Theater Executive Director Merritt Olsen.

Here is the plan on how you can help:

First, you vote by buying a ticket. Each ticket represents a vote for one of the eager contestants. You can buy more than more ticket.

Second, donate with a chance at a raffle item.

Third, show your support by cheering on your contestant at the event.

— When: July 24, following the opening ceremony for the Relay for Life.
— Where: Friday Harbor High School track.
— How: The pig kisser vote tickets will have been sold, votes counted, and the pig kissers will be waiting for the results. The “winner” (some prize!) will be announced, and the cute and unsuspecting pig will be kissed.

This is the second annual event for the community, celebrating the novelty of the San Juan Island pig (because of the Pig War) and the notoriety of contestants, all while raising much-needed funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
